What does AVID stand for?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This means that students are self-motivated in their pursuit of rigorous preparation that will lead to success in college.

What is AVID?

AVID is a college preparation course for average-achieving students with potential to succeed in a rigorous academic curriculum with the support provided.

What do students do in AVID?

Students work on time management, study skills, goal setting, organization, high-level thinking, group projects, college research, tutorials, test preparation, reading, writing, math, and oral communication.

What are tutorials?

Adult and senior tutors guide student groups through subject matter using the Socratic Method.

How do I get in to AVID?

AVID students are recruited based on standardized test scores with Stanines of 5-7, GPA’s between 2.0-3.5, and positive discipline and attendance records. Then students follow a process of teacher recommendations, applications, and personal interviews.

What courses do I have to take if I am in AVID?

High School AVID students are required to follow a college preparatory curriculum including honors and AP courses. Middle school AVID students take advanced math courses.
