How many fine arts credits are required for HS graduation?

For graduation from a  DoDDS high school, students must have one (1) fine arts credit. This may be achieved taking art, music, band or drama. In art, classes may be taken for one semester (. 5 credit ) or all year.( 1.0 credit). A variety of art classes can also be taken for elective credit.

Do you have to be a good artist to make a good grade in art?

No,  but students are encouraged to do their best. Grades are not based on painting or drawing skill or perfect hand-eye coordination. Rather, they are evaluated on effort, following directions, completing projects, reading and research.

How are art students evaluated?

  • Participation in discussions/ Daily performance: use of class time, effort on work -- 10%
  • Evaluation of varying required elements in artwork/Meeting project requirements -- 50%
  • Effort and timely completion of assignments -- 20%
  • Assignments ( research, quizzes/tests) -- 20%

What kind of HS art classes are offered?

Art Fundamentals I: Introduction to the elements of art through a variety of mediums such as; oil pastels, hand building pottery, chalk pastels, printmaking, drawing styles, pen etching and 3-D projects. It is a time for students to build self confidence in their skills through exploring art history, cultures and styles. 

The following art classes are offered (Students are advised to first take Art Fundamentals I ):
  • Studio Art : Projects are graded with a more rigorous rubric with an emphasis on independent research and personal skill development
  • 3-D Design ( sculpture/crafts/ceramics): This level II course is designed to further develop essential 3-D design skills with sculpture/building materials.
  • Computer Art/Photography: Explores graphic computer design and digital photography as fine art and its commercial uses
